We offer a broad range of cigars which includes cigars which are perfect for new cigar smokers. Our recommendations for new cigar smokers are based on the following criteria:
Lighter flavours. As most newbies find cigars too strong and overpowering, we usually suggest the lighter cigars as a good entry point.
Inexpensive. A new cigar smoker doesn't with to spend much on trying something that he may not like, so they're generally cautious and will want something on the cheaper end.
Size. A new cigar smoker doesn't need to spend one and a half hours to see whether they like cigars, so its always best to ease them in with a smaller stick, a one hour smoke maximum.
Quality. Just because its the newbies first time smoking a cigar doesn't mean they should pick the cheapest (and often worst) cigar in the range. Many people try the Jose Piedra cigars as their first ones, for example, which is not a good idea. They're machine made, not hand made like all good Cuban cigars (and all our range), and they're not a great smoke. Someone trying a poor cigar as their smoke may get the wrong impression as to what cigar smoking is all about.
With these rules in mind, here are our top 5 cigar suggestions for beginners:
A fantastic cigar, and very different to the Epicure No.2. Mild and earthy beginning. Evolves progressively into cream, wood, bit of spice and a hint of mushroom. Perfect for beginners as its on the lighter end, inexpensive, fairly small (only 4 inches long) and is sheer quality.
One of the best merevas of the cuban size. A great balance between quality and price, this cigar offers extremely good value. Medium taste, good aroma. One of the most appreciated cigars ever. It has a nutty flavour which most beginners will appreciate.
One of the most famous cigars from Cuba, this Robusto cigar, with excellent burn, is the last product from Hoyo de Monterrey. With a smooth strength, it has an intense tobacco taste, blended with cocoa, cinnamon and dried fruits.
Some might be surprised by my choice to include this in the top 5 for beginners, but I have a good reasoning. Simply, its a wonderful cigar, probably the best in the world at this size. The Petit no.2 is of course a shorter version of the award-winning classic Montecristo No. 2. A new cigar smoker should smoke quality so that they'll hopefully appreciate the joy of cigar smoking. And in terms of quality they don't come much better than the Petit no.2.
Ok, so we did say inexpensive was an important consideration for new smokers, but we just couldn't resist shortlisting the Cohiba Robustos. Cohiba is probably the world's most famous cigar brand, it being the brand smoked by Fidel Castro himself. Flavours evolve from initial cream and mild tones to medium strength and then culminating with a spice showdown. It's amazing smoothness makes it a great choice for new cigar smokers who don't mind spending rm100 on something special. It actually sells in the shops for rm175 so we're around 40% cheaper than the shops around KL.
